The Sherman County Bank came into existence on January 2, 1969, as the successor bank of The First National Bank in Loup City. The change, moving from a Nationally chartered bank to a State chartered bank, was made for economic and logistical purposes and has proven to be a very sound and wise change.

The development and expansion of irrigated crop acreage, which began in the late 1960's and continued into the early 1980's, created a great degree of prosperity in the region. Another significant factor has been the expansion of the livestock population. Coupled with a resilient ag-services sector, these factors have created an important growth opportunity for the Bank. As the Bank experienced this welcome growth, management has been careful to maintain a strong capital account to provide for safe, sound banking operations. At the end of the third quarter of 1993, the Bank's capital accounts exceeded $4,000,000. This strong capital position has allowed the Bank greater flexibility in meeting the borrowing needs of the community, as well as
providing a sound base from which to extend our business enterprise.
Expanding farming and commercial operations require increased borrowing capacity and Sherman County Bank continues to extend its lending authority in order to fill these needs.
The late 1980's brought about an opportunity to expand our business market through acquisition of several branches. The addition of the Farwell, Cotesfield, and Dannebrog branches
significantly enlarged our service area. Strong loan demand and deposit growth
was experienced from the branches and we are proud to have been able to retain banking services for the people in these communities.
In 1992 the Sherman County Bank started a Loan Production Office in St. Paul, Nebraska in an effort to assist the Bank’s growing loan demand in the St. Paul area. In October of 1997 this Loan Production Office became a full service branch of Sherman County Bank.
In October of 1997 the Sherman County Bank changed the name of it’s branches in Howard County to “Howard County Bank, A Branch of Sherman County Bank.” This name change reinforced the fact that the money which Howard County residents deposited in those branches were used to meet the lending and community needs of the residents of Howard County.
The Sherman County Bank will continue to play a vital role in the future progress of the area. Although our business is primarily ag based, we will also continue to promote sound economic development in our communities wherever possible. We understand and frequently use the many government programs available in an effort to provide interested individuals an opportunity to pursue a business venture in the communities we serve.
Our goal, simply stated, is to provide the citizens of this area a safe, sound institution for their financial needs. We are strongly capitalized and conservatively managed in order that we may continue to expand financial services in an effort to meet the changing needs of our customers. We maintain a friendly, well-trained staff, that is always pleased to be of service to our customers.
Our office in Cotesfield served our
customers well for many years, however, the advent of technology, the new
building in St. Paul, and the increasing number of Cotesfield branch
customers using our other offices caused the Bank to make a VERY
tough decision and Cotesfield branch closed on December 31,
2005.
This is your bank—here to serve you in every way possible with facilities in Loup City, Farwell,
Dannebrog, and St. Paul. We're proud to join with you, our customers, as partners working together for a prosperous future.
